A while back, during a walk with a close friend, an offhand remark stuck with me:
“If you had a superpower, it would be to engage in conversation with anything, living or not.”
At the time, it felt like a playful observation. But the more I turned it over in my mind, the more it collided with a growing unease I’ve felt about where technology—specifically spatial computing and Augmented Reality—is heading.
The Clutter of Hyper-Reality
We are rushing toward an augmented future that looks suspiciously like Keiichi Matsuda’s dystopian short film Hyper-Reality: a world choked by flashing digital billboards, aggressive pop-up notifications, and inescapable visual clutter. The current “Internet of Things” is equally uninspiring, reducing our physical surroundings to sterile dashboards, metric-trackers, and diagnostic pings.
I wanted to explore the exact opposite direction.
What if spatial technology didn’t shout at us, but quietly listened?
That question led me to start drafting a new addition to my White Papers project: Anima.

Shinto, Kami, and Modern AI
The intellectual spark for Anima crystallized when I connected modern natural language models with the animist philosophy of Shinto.
In Shinto, kami (spiritual entities or vital forces) inhabit both natural landscapes and everyday handcrafted objects. What if modern AI could serve as an interpretive medium that allows the material world to hold, synthesize, and communicate human presence?
Instead of covering the world in noisy digital paint, Anima proposes an invisible, opt-in layer of reality:
- The Glyph: Silent spatial coordinates anchored to physical objects without requiring QR codes or physical stickers.
- The Trace: Ephemeral human marks—asynchronous voice notes, shared memories, or private spatial dead-drops—left tethered to that coordinate.
- The Layered Commons: A spectrum of visibility where messages can be public lore, shared among private circles, or left as 1:1 whispers for a specific person to discover when they physically arrive at the spot.
Over time, an object accumulates these human traces. A weathered park bench, a corner booth at a neighborhood diner, or a civic monument stops being inert matter and develops an emergent, conversational memory.
Tactile Traditions and Psychogeography
Anima draws from older, tactile traditions of urban psychogeography—the coded visual language of the Hobo sign alphabet and the localized storytelling of the early 2000s Yellow Arrow project—bringing them into direct dialogue with spatial intelligence.
Rather than imposing synthetic digital noise onto physical reality, we treat physical space as a sacred vessel for collective memory.
What’s Next
I am currently formalizing the manifesto, interface principles, and system architecture. The goal is to articulate an alternative future for spatial computing: one rooted in quiet discovery, shared memory, and deep respect for the physical world.
